SPAR CSR activity

SPAR decided in 2006 that its nationwide presence could be put to good use in relation to fund-raising. SPAR had indeed been involved in raising funds for many charities on both a local and national level, however, it was felt that more could be done and in 2006 we launched the SPAR Charity Programme.

Because of our strength in numbers SPAR and SPAR Express are able to distribute collection boxes nationwide and, in addition to local and nationwide fundraising events, have the capacity to raise considerable awareness and money for charity.

SPAR announced in December 2014 that their new charity partner is the National Children’s Hospital Tallaght and to kick-start the €200,000 planned investment, an innovative social media campaign was launched. The Twitter Christmas Tree campaign raised €20,000 for the National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght. ‘Powered’ by tweets using the #underthetree hashtag, SPAR’s Twitter Christmas Tree, which was erected in Ranelagh, consisted of 1,600 festive bulbs which were lit one-by-one in the run up to Christmas Eve. Once the tree was fully illuminated, SPAR made the donation to the National Children’s Hospital, which forms part of SPAR’s overall fundraising target of €200,000.

On March 9th Rugby Player, Mike McCarthy, announced  the National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght as the official charity partner for the SPAR Great Ireland Run. Mike McCarthy and Willie O’Byrne, Managing Director, BWG Foods, will be running the 10k race on behalf of the National Children’s Hospital Tallaght, which will take place on Saturday, the 11th of April in the Phoenix Park, Dublin. They will join thousands of other runners and their families in what is both a highlight of the athletics calendar and a great family day out. Entries for all events are available at www.greatirelandrun.org.

SPAR’s official charity partnership programme, which is now in its eighth year, will not only provide essential funding for facility upgrades and equipment, but will also help to create greater awareness of the charity’s fantastic work through the convenience retailer’s nationwide network of stores.

As part of the partnership SPAR will raise money from the sale of SPAR Own Brand products, in-store collection box contributions, and various local and national fundraising initiatives.

Previous Charity Partners

Through its previous partnership with 3Ts (Turn the Tide of Suicide), SPAR raised over €1 million which helped fund the organisation’s work towards helping to lower suicide rates in Ireland. ‘The 3ts – Turn the Tide of Suicide’ is a registered charity founded to raise awareness of the problem of suicide in Ireland and to raise funds to help lower suicide rates through dedicated research, educational support and intervention.

SPAR supported ‘The Irish Hospice Foundation’ from 2007 – 2009 and raised over €300,000 in much needed funds. These funds went to helping support one of their most important projects – the Hospice Friendly Hospitals (HfH) Programme.
